Travel regulations for Bhutan have been updated considerably in the past few years making the process more flexible and transparent for visitors. Here is what you need to know in order to plan a visit.
Entry Requirements and Visa Processing
All international visitors to Bhutan must pay the sustainable development fee (SDF) of $100 per person per night plus a one time visa fee of $40. The fees are paid directly to the Department of Immigration and visitors can apply for and pay for their visa and SDF fee online through the official government portal.
If you choose to book a package tour with Bhutan Peak Adventure, we can take care of these fees (no commissions on government fees) for you along with the hotel, guide and transportation costs. Regardless of how you receive your visa letter, be sure to print it and bring the physical copy to the airport with you.
To apply for a visa you will need the following things on hand:
- Scan of the front page of your passport (100-150dpi, color is preferred) in jpg format
- Home Address and Telephone Number
- Your occupation
Flights to Bhutan
The only airlines operating into Bhutan are Drukair and Bhutan Airlines with regular service to Bhutan from Bangkok, Delhi, Kathmandu and Singapore. The airlines have been expanding and are offering flights to cites such as Dubai, Kuala Lumpur and even Hong Kong but the offerings appear to be seasonal and you should check with the airlines.
Similar to the SDF and Visa fees, we can book the tickets for your directly so that you have only a single payment to be made.
Booking Timings
During the Paro and Thimphu festivals you should plan and book flights and hotels six months in advance; we often see hotels and flights completely sold out at around 4-5 months. Other times of the year, a one month leeway is sufficient.
