“Tsechu” translates to “festival” and is celebrated annually in honour of Buddhism in Bhutan. One of these festivals takes place in Paro, where a very sacred event occurs—the unfurling of the world’s oldest Guru Thongdrel on the last day of the celebration. Thongdrel means “Liberation upon sight.” This thangka is an appliqué embroidery of Guru Rinpoche, who brought Buddhism to Bhutan and is believed to have been created in the late 17th century.

Festival dates change each year. Please consult the Festival Dates page and better yet, contact us so that we can reconfirm the dates (sometimes they change).

Program

  • Day 1

    Paro

On arrival at Paro International Airport, you will be received by the representative of Bhutan Peak Adventure, who will be guiding you throughout your stay in Bhutan.

  • Day 2

    Taktsang Monastery Hike

This morning, we will drive to the base of the Taktsang Monastery. This monastery is built on a very steep ledge, approximately 900 meters above Paro Valley, by Guru Padmasambhava, the founder of Buddhism in Bhutan. He is believed to have flown on the back of a tigress. Taktsang is a key highlight of the tour and one of the most sacred pilgrimage sites in Bhutan.  Lunch will be served at the cafeteria. The cafeteria offers a beautiful view of the Monastery.  Visit Kyichu Lhakhang on the way.

  • Day 3

    Paro

We will drive to Rimpong Dzong to observe Paro Tsechu. The Tshechu is a significant cultural event that showcases traditional mask dances performed by monks. During these performances, the monks don colourful silk brocade costumes, which symbolise the victory of good over evil. This festival attracts people of all ages, who come dressed in their finest clothes and jewellery to partake in the sacred celebrations. The gathering at the Dzong provides an opportunity for the community to witness and celebrate these vibrant cultural traditions. Drive to Thimphu after lunch.

  • Day 4

    Thimphu

Today, you will explore Thimphu. We will begin with a visit to Memorial Chorten, Kuenselphodrang, to view the statue of the sitting Buddha, which overlooks the capital city. We will then drive to the Mini Zoo, where you will see the country’s most endangered and national animal – the Takin.  It’s a goat-antelope found only in this part of the Himalayas and one of the planet’s most vulnerable creatures. Visit the Nunnery and experience a different way of life and the serene atmosphere of the Buddhist convent.  Visit Simply Bhutan. Lunch will be served at the museum.

After a delightful lunch, we will visit the Bhutan Post Office Museum, where you can admire Bhutan’s stunning, award-winning stamps that showcase the country’s rich cultural heritage. Following that, stroll over to the vibrant Centenary Farmer’s Market, a bustling hub of activity. Here, you’ll find villagers from nearby districts showcasing their freshly harvested agricultural produce.

In the evening, visit Tashichho Dzong, a stunning medieval fortress that shows a glimpse of what life must have been like here centuries ago.

  • Day 5

    Punakha Day Trip

Today, we will take an excursion to Punakha, which is about a 2.5-hour drive from Thimphu. It’s best to start early, around 8 a.m., to allow plenty of time for exploration. The drive crosses the stunning Dochula Pass, which stands at 3,050 meters above sea level. Here, you’ll have the chance to see 108 stupas and the beautiful Druk Wangyal Monastery, which is situated atop a hill. On a clear day, you can enjoy magnificent views of Bhutan’s mountain ranges.

Next, we will visit the Khamsum Yuelley Monastery, located just a 20-minute drive north of Punakha. This is followed by a leisurely 45-minute hike to reach the monastery itself. After lunch, we will explore Punakha Dzong and walk across the suspension bridge before driving back to Thimphu. Free evening.
